Crook Name: Opal’s Misty Isle Dream
Artist’s Statement:
The inspiration for this crook is Opal Montague, a woman who has been raising sheep on Vashon for over 50 years. Aside from raising sheep, she has used spinning, weaving, and knitting to absorb the fiber from her beloved animals, creating treasured heirlooms.
Opal gave me the raw wool from one of her sheep. I sorted, washed, combed, spun, plied, and then knitted its yarn to create the background gray fabric. The beads chosen to adorn the gray wool are all in shades of the Misty Isle Field where the Vashon Sheepdog Classic is held each year. Greens, maroons, browns, and golds.....One needs to see this field just once to recognize the beautiful significance of these colored tones that define this setting. Other knitted and needle-felted items also adorn the crook, all in the spirit of sheep, the natural setting, and the magic this event creates.
