The History of the Border Collie

          Picture
The modern Border Collie evolved on the borders of England and Scotland about 300 years ago.  The northern terrain required shepherds to use strong dogs that could work at great distances from their handlers.  These dogs also needed to be thoughful enough to work on their own initiative.  Border Collies first appeared in the United States in the mid eighteenth century as working companions to immigrant British Farmers.

The Border Collie has  become the most universal sheepherding dogs in the world due to their speed, work ethic and intelligence.

The first sheepdog trials were competitions held between shepherds to showcase the talents of their canine working partners.  This also allowed the shepherds and farmers to be on the lookout for talented dogs to bring into their breeding programs and further the talent of their kennels.

Sheepdog trials are followed closely by the public in the United Kingdom and have been gaining popularity as a family-friendly sport to watch in the United States.
